Here's some information about the statistics round at Vero Beach from Carol Selph:

"We are trying to run the team round similar to the format of the free response questions for the actual AP exam, except each question is timed individually.  Following are the rules we will be following on Saturday for the statistics team round:
1. Each response must be given in complete sentences.  The explanation will be scored on completeness, preciseness, accuracy, and organization.
2. The questions must be answered in the appropriate space on the official answer sheet.  No other answers will be scored.
3. Students are to use any "AP approved" graphing calculator.  No other calculators are permitted.
4. A team has a maximum of three students.
5. There are exactly five response questions.  The time of each question is predetermined and will vary according to the depth of the desired responses.  Each question will be submitted at the end of the time period.  The five-minute question will be worth a total of 20 points, the ten-minute questions will be worth 30 points, and the fifteen-minute question will be worth 40 points.  There will be a maximum of 150 points awarded per team.

November 23, 2003:

The FAMAT competition is quickly approaching! Here is some information from Mrs. Hiller about the Vero Beach Invitational on January 24, 2004:

1. We will be having a statistics division with an individual test and a team round. There will be no more than 3 students on a team for the team round.  The division award will be the sum of the 3 individual test scores and the team round score. Since this is a division with an individual test and team round (it won't count towards sweepstakes), students will NOT be able to compete in the other divisions. The statistics team round will consist of 4 or 5 questions which will take about 10-15 minutes each, comparable to the free response questions on the Advanced Placement exam. Graphing calculators may be used on both the individual and team rounds for statistics.

2. We will have an "e" off similar to the "pi" off at Palm Harbor. Students will have 90 seconds to write down as many digits of "e" as possible. There will be an award for the person who can write down the most digits in the correct order. There will be times designated so all competitors will be able to participate.

3. The postmark deadline for the registration form is January 10, 2004, and this will be adhered to. Please plan accordingly and meet the deadline so we will be prepared for ALL competitors on the date of the competition. Remember, the registration form is in the sponsor's guide. If you did not receive a sponsor's guide in the mail, you can download one at www.famat.org.

4. You will need to bring a blue enrollment form with your school ID# and your school name bubbled, as well as any blue enrollment forms for students who have not been enrolled online at www.famat.org

5.. You will need to bring your enrollment list as downloaded from www.famat.org with the competitors participating highlighted and the ID#s numbers they will be using.

8. There will be an interschool test.

If you have any questions, please contact Carol Selph at carol.selph@indian-river.k12.fl.us or Susan Hiller at susan.hiller@indian-river.k12.fl.us.

Click here for directions and hotel info. This competition is during season, it is a good idea to book your rooms in advance.
